Botanical Name: Ocimum kilimandscharicum × basilicum 'Dark Opal'
History
African Blue Basil is a hybrid between Ocimum kilimandscharicum (Camphor Basil) and Ocimum basilicum 'Dark Opal' ). It was first developed in the 1980s, making it a relatively new addition to the basil family. Its unique qualities, including a perennial growth habit in warm climates and attractive purple-veined leaves, have made it popular among gardeners and cooks.
Description
This plant is known for its striking appearance, with deep green leaves that feature purple veins and a subtle purple tinge on the undersides. The flowers are a vibrant pink-purple, attracting bees and other pollinators to the garden. African Blue Basil grows to about 1.5m in height and almost the same wide.
Growing Conditions
African Blue Basil thrives in warm, sunny conditions. It prefers well-drained soil with a neutral pH and requires regular watering, especially in dry conditions. Consistent moisture will promote lush growth while it is more drought-tolerant than many basil varieties. This basil variety is perennial in warm climates (zones 9 to 11) but can be grown as an annual in cooler regions.
Medicinal Use
The leaves of African Blue Basil are rich in essential oils, including camphor, which gives it distinctive medicinal properties. It's used for its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties. It can be applied topically to wounds or insect bites or ingested to help with digestive issues and respiratory conditions.
Culinary Use
The robust flavour of African Blue Basil is somewhat similar to traditional sweet basil but with a unique camphor undertone due to its essential oil content. It's excellent for adding a flavourful twist to pestos, salads, and sauces. The colourful leaves also make it an attractive garnish.
Other Uses
Apart from its medicinal and culinary applications, African Blue Basil is used in gardens as an ornamental plant due to its attractive foliage and flowers. It's also beneficial for attracting pollinators like bees, which are vital for the pollination of many other garden plants.
