Botanical Name: Arctium lappa
Burdock is a biennial herb, native to Europe and Asia; it grows to a height of 1.5m. The large broad green leaves are hairy and paler underneath. The flowers are reddish purple with green hooked bracts. Burdock has deep long roots that are white on the inside and dark brown on the outside.
The roots are eaten as a food in Japan they are known as Gobo, they are a good source of dietary fibre and are very nutritious. They can be harvested in spring of their first year or autumn of their second year.
Burdock root helps the body cleanse itself from toxins, opening the channels of elimination, bowel, kidney, lungs and skin. Useful where there is a buildup of metabolic waste with associated inflammation as in rheumatism, gout and arthritis. Burdock is a potent blood cleanser useful for skin conditions such as boils, acne, eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea. A decoction of burdock root and dandelion root can be taken for acne.
The seeds have a reported hypoglycemic action. Chinese use the seed to cool and decongest. An infusion of the seeds will help to remove toxins in fevers and infections of mumps and measles.
