Barberry root and stem bark can be used as a decoction to help with digestive problems and travellers diarrohea. It also has liver protecting properties. The decoction can also be applied topically to wounds and cuts. The alkaloid berberine found in barberry is responsible for the yellow colour and is antibacterial, antifungal, antiinflammatory and immune stimulating.
