Botanical Name: Origanum vulgare 'Aureum'
Golden Oregano ‘Aureum’ is a golden leaved, ornamental variety of the Common Oregano. This evergreen herb grows to a height of 15-30cm and spreads approximately 45-60cm. The brightly coloured leaves are 1-2.5cm wide and have rounded edges. The summer flowers are star shaped and may vary from white to lilac-pink. The golden hue in the fragrant leaves is more pronounced in mild or cool weather.
There are many different varieties of oregano, each with different characteristics and culinary uses. Oregano also has powerful healing properties including use as a painkiller, anti-septic and anti-inflammatory. Please see our description of Common Oregano and our other Oregano Varieties for more information.
Growing Conditions
Golden oregano is a fast grower like many oregano varieties and spreads to form a low groundcover. However, it is one of the less vigorous forms and maintains a low creeping habit. It is best grown in full sun, but is tolerant of partial shade. The water requirement is low, with dry to average soils being well suited to this herb. Good soil drainage is necessary to prevent water logging. Once established this herb is hardy and requires little care. It can even handle a small amount of foot traffic.
The plant should be trimmed after flowering to encourage compact and full growth. Golden oregano also suits container growth when not being used as an accent plant in the garden. Propagation may be via cuttings or plant division in spring. Stems may be harvested for fresh use once the plant has reached about 12 cm in height, but before flowering.
Culinary Uses
Like other oregano it is useful as a culinary herb, although many gardeners use Golden Oregano to provide an accent in the garden. The leaves may be used fresh or dried.
