Rock Samphire
Botanical Name: Crithmum maritimum
Rock Samphire, also known as Sea Fennel, is a perennial plant native to the coasts of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, which has adapted to other coastal areas around the world. It belongs to the Apiaceae or carrot family.
This robust plant typically grows up to 50cm in height, with a stout, greenish-brown, branching stem. The leaves are succulent and aromatic, divided into linear segments, resembling the foliage of some types of ferns. In summer, it produces clusters of tiny, yellow-green flowers that turn into small, oblong, ridged fruits.
Rock Samphire has been recognized and used since ancient times. It's often mentioned in the literature; notably, Shakespeare referenced it in "King Lear." In the past, it was also collected and pickled or used in salads and soups. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Rock Samphire was commercially harvested and exported from the Isle of Wight, where it grew abundantly.
Growing Conditions Rock Samphire thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Due to its coastal origins, it can tolerate poor, sandy, or stony soil conditions and survive in areas with high salt levels. While it's highly adapted to seaside conditions, it doesn't survive well in regions with heavy frost.
Culinary Use Rock Samphire has a crisp texture and a unique flavour described as a blend of carrot, celery, and the sea - tangy and slightly spicy. It can be used fresh in salads, steamed like asparagus, or cooked in soups and stews. Its aromatic leaves often flavour fish and other seafood dishes, reflecting its maritime heritage. It can also be pickled or used to infuse spirits and vinegar.
Medicinal Use Traditionally, Rock Samphire has been used for its diuretic, digestive, and detoxifying properties.
