Botanical Name: Pimpinella anisum
Anise is an aromatic annual with ovate shaped leaves and umbels of white flowers in summer followed by ribbed anise flavoured seeds.
The leaves can be added to salads, soups and chopped over vegetables. The seeds are used to flavour bread, cakes and curries.
The seeds can be used to relieve flatulence, indigestion, colic and dry coughs and bronchitis. A seed tea can also increase lactation in breast feeding mums.
Anise makes a good companion plant, the flowers attract parasitic wasps.
Growing Conditions
Anise likes good drainage and a sunny position. When planting out do not disturb the roots.
