Lemon Verbena is a perennial shrub, originating from South America, which grows up to 3 meters. It has small white flowers which grow in clusters at the branch ends.
The clean lemon taste of fresh or dried leaves make a refreshing herb tea on its own or combined with mint and or ginger.
Lemon verbena can be used to add lemon flavour to fish and poultry dishes. Add chopped leaves to marinades and dressings, fruit salads and drinks.
A hot herbal infusion of lemon verbena acts as a mild sedative. It’s also used to treat fevers and minor digestive disorders.
Dried leaves of Lemon Verbena retain their aroma and flavour for many years which make them useful in potpourris, draw sachets and sleep pillows.
Growing Conditions
Lemon Verbena is a deciduous shrub and should be pruned back in spring when new growth appears. It prefers well-drained soil in a sunny position.
