Botanical Name: 4. Salvia microphylla ‘Cyclamen’
Salvia microphylla ‘Cyclamen is a shrubby perennial growing from 80cm to 1 meter high, with a similar width. In some regions and/or conditions it may be a smaller plant of around 75cm high and 60 cm wide. The large mid green cordate or heart shaped leaves are roughly textured and can reach up to 3-4 cm long. They roll in slightly to the centre and have slightly rounded serrations on the edges and visible veins. The flowers are a bright cerise pink, with the lower tow lobes being much larger than the small tubular hood. This salvia is has some of the largest blooms of the salvia family. The long flowering time in Australia is from spring to autumn. This salvia will sucker, but is not considered to be invasive. It is easily controlled and responds well to pruning which keeps it in shape and extends the flowering period. Salvia ‘Cyclamen’ is drought tolerant and frost hardy. It will do well in a dry garden, but requires well drained soil and does respond to regular water. A full sun to part shade position will be suitable.
The salvia family has over 900 members with an extensive history as culinary, medicinal and ornamental plants. Ornamental salvias have become collectors items, as gardeners try to find a place in their garden for each and every one. There are salvias that will suit every type of soil and climate.
